Something went very wrong with our WTI crude oil trading bots on August 13th, 2026.

We launched two strategies—meant to capture geopolitical reversals and breakouts in CL futures—that day. By the end of the cohort window, we had:

  • -$160.00 realized loss

  • 0 winning trades out of 4 total entries

  • $0 captured of the $2.32/contract move CL made that day

  • ~$18,500 in theoretically available profit left entirely on the table

In this post, I’m going to walk through what happened in detail—bot by bot, trade by trade, bug by bug. I’ll show you exactly where the plumbing failed, why the alpha existed but never got captured, and what we’re doing to fix it.

This is technical post-mortem work. But if you’re building or running trading systems, I think you’ll find the lessons useful. Some of these failures cost us under a hundred lines of code. Others were architectural. All of them were preventable.
